Beside each one of us, sitting closer than our closest neighbor, is Mr. or Ms. Doubt. They whisper questions into our heart. They ask that quiet question of everything we believe: Really? They challenge us on whether we truly, fully believe what we say we believe. Mr. and Ms. Doubt were often called evil as I grew up. I was told to push aside doubts and just believe.
But then, reading Matthew 28 in Greek, I realized something. Mr. and Ms. Doubt were with Jesus’ disciples from the beginning. The disciples themselves worshiped and doubted at the same time. And we can too. The doubts will never leave us. But neither should they be pushed aside or ignored. Instead, they can be embraced. We can and should worship with our doubts. Even when we don’t understand, we can still worship the One who loves us, even with all our doubts and questions.
